  • 28 May, 1949: Jyestharaj Joshi, is an Indian chemical Engineer, Nuclear Scientist, consultant and professor. He is widely known for his innovations in nuclear reactor design and generally regarded as a respected teacher. He has been honoured, both academically and socially, by several prominent institutions. He has published over 442 scientific papers.
  • 28 May, 1952: Pinaki Chandra Ghose, is currently the Lokpal of India since 23 March, 2019. He is a retired judge of Supreme court of India. He had also served as Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court, and before that, as a judge of Calcutta High Court. At the time of appointment, he was the member of National Human Rights Commission. 
  • 28 May, 1958: Sunil Deshmukh, Member of Legislative Assembly, from the constituency of Amravati, Maharashtra, India. In 2009, he was expelled from Congress due to his rebellion in Maharasthra Vidhan Sabha Election, 2009. He was denied ticket to contest the election from his Amravati constituency in order to accomodate Mr. Raosaheb Shekhawat, son of then President of India, Pratibha Patel. However, in 2021, he rejoined Congress.
  • 28 May, 1978: Gulshan Devaiah, Indian film actor from Karnataka who apperars primarily in many bollywood films. He is mostly known for his roles in Shaitan, Hate Story and Hunterr. His performance in Shaitaan was critically praised and earned him a nomination from Filmfare award for Best Male, Debut.
  • 28 May, 1915: Gopala Ramanujam, was an Indian politician and co-founder of Indian National Trade Union Congress. He was a recipient of third highest Indian Civilian award of Padma Bhushan.

  • 28 May, 1928: Martanda Bhairava Tondaiman Bahadur, who was the ruler of princely state of Pudukkottai from 15 April, 1886 to 28 May, 1928. He died at the age of 52. 
  • 28 May, 1964: Mehboob Khan was a explorer producer- director of Indian cinema, best know for directing the social epic Mother India, which won the Filmfare awards for Best Film and Best director, two National Film Awards, and was a nominee for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
  • 28 May, 2003: Zubair Ahmed Siddiqi, better known as Marc Zuber, was an actor who appeared in many British and Hindi films and television dramas. He died in London, England.
  •  28 May, 1999: B. Vittalacharya, was an Indian film director and producer known for his works in Telugu cinema and Kannada cinema. Vittalacharya formed his film production company Vittal Productions, which produced the first film directed by him, Rajya Lakshmi.

Fire and explosion at Dhori coalpit in Dhanbad killed 400 people. 1965 Dhanbad coalpit disaster occurred on 28 May, 1965 in a coalpit near Dhanbad, India. An explosion occurred in Dhori colliery near Dhanbad, which led to fireside within the mine. The fireplace killed 268 miners. Dhori colliery is found near Bermo.
